Nuclear-Free Future Initiative
A Special Learning Opportunity, June-August, Free and Open to All.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. According to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, the world is closer to the threat of nuclear bombing happening again than ever before. The Bulletin's Doomsday Clock puts us at 80 seconds to midnight โ the closest it's ever been. At the same time, communities that have suffered from bombings and testing continue to deal with their effects. This year, Nihon Hidankyo, the organization of nuclear bombing survivors, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their unrelenting campaign to ensure they are the last to ever experience the horror of nuclear war.
Do you want to learn more about nuclear weapons but don't know where to start? Does the issue of nuclear weapons feel too overwhelming to even think about? Do you wonder what ordinary people can do to prevent nuclear war, or nuclear accidents?
Many of you know that my greatest honor is to serve as Peace Correspondent for the City of Nagasaki. I'm an international legal scholar specializing in nuclear weapons.
This summer, in partnership with the City of Nagasaki, Everyday Ambassador is launching a special Nuclear-Free Future initiative. I'll be coming to you all summer from Nagasaki! We're exploring:
The history: the bombings, the testing of nuclear weapons, and their continuing effects
The law: the international treaties, the watchdog organizations, what they have achieved and what remains to be done
The personal stories: of survivors, activists, artists, diplomats, government officials and college students who are making a difference
What you can do from where you are
Fun from Nagasaki and Japan!โand tips for planning your own next trip
