Welcome to Day 1 of the Nuclear-Free Futures Initiative!
I'm so glad you're here.
This summer, we’re taking a deep dive into the nuclear threat. I’ll be joining you live from Nagasaki. A full schedule of what you can expect is in the post linked below.
To start us off, I’m sharing today two special downloads. First, a list of reading recommendations. I have included a mix of academic and more popular readings, as well as films and websites. Many of the books and articles are from small or academic presses, so you may have to do some digging at your local library to find them. Don’t feel pressure to read all, or even any of these texts. It’s entirely up to you.
If you have time for only one book that will give you some context, I would recommend Susan Southard’s exquisitely researched and beautifully written Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War. (Viking, 2015).
Second, here are some reflection questions to ponder as we move through this month’s activities:
What’s next: Every Thursday through August, you’ll receive something new from me. This Thursday, I’m sharing an essay about my own journey with this global challenge and some of what I have learned along the way. I look forward to learning about yours! And on Fridays, my “Ambassador’s notebook,” a more personal and lighter take on the issues.
Going Deeper Together
Some of you may want to engage more deeply, in direct dialogue with me, with global experts and Nagasaki activists, and with fellow change-makers.
The Everyday Ambassador Salons create space for exactly that—intimate, substantive and fun monthly conversations with global experts and a community of thoughtful people from around the world, all exploring how to bridge the gap between caring and acting on the issues that matter most.
For this summer only: While the Salons typically require an annual commitment to ensure a strong cohort, participants in this mini-course can join for the three month duration of the mini-course only. Just upgrade to a paid monthly subscription to the newsletter.
Whether you choose to engage with this material solo or in community, I'm so grateful you're here for this journey.
