This is a powerful and beautiful account, Annelise. I wonder how one “becomes” an icon. I struggle to identify an iconic image as an American - is it necessary to have an external symbol?
So great to hear from you Anne! I think there is something generational here. The young people in my life are constantly thinking about how to be iconic, as if capturing themselves as Instagram material. It’s easy to be critical but I was inspired by Yuki to see it is another way of living that can be deployed for good too.
The term icon definitely has a connection to instagram but I can think of many women of different generations with icon status: Helen Mirren, Oprah Winfrey, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - just a few. But Yuki did something different to achieve icon status: she created a public image without beginning in the public realm. That kind of “becoming” is truly impressive.
